What causes breakthrough bleeding?
Breakthrough bleeding is more common when a low-dose birth-control pill is taken continuously, possibly because the low hormone levels make the padding of the uterine lining thinner and more fragile, and more susceptible to wear and tear. In one trial, 28 percent of women still had irregular bleeding after six months of continuous pill use; after a year, 10 percent of women did.
