This a great article! I do not know what I would do without my daily runs. Not only do I enjoy the exercise itself, but it's a wonderful stress reliever. My days are not complete without a run, even if it's for only 30 minutes.

@ Imgrx:
I feel that earbuds are the most effective, but I do understand what you mean about the pads getting gross after being sweaty. You can also invest in disposable earbud covers--not the most economical maybe, but it's an idea. There are also the kind of ear buds that wrap around the back of your head and hook over your ears, have you tried those? The celebs also seem to be big on the big headphones that cover your ears; I've seen pictures of Fergie wearing them. Not sure how great this would be for hardcore running or for sweat management, though.
Let me know what you find out.
Cheers,
Lee

I too would like to defend the "No reason not to run" comment. I feel she was making a personal statement and referring to herself. Obviously and unfortunately there are folks out there that have situations or disabilities that prevent them from running. I don't think she was trying to dis or insult anyone. I am sorry you have a disability that prevents you from running, but then why, may I ask are you reading an article about running?
PS - I was unsure about running in the rain at first too but it is refreshing and invigorating. It makes me feel strong! So get out there girls and Crush it!

WOW - we get it, you are angry about your health problem. We all hope and pray that you are getting the best medical care possible. However, it's OBVIOUS there are many who will have medical problems which will prevent them from running, it's not necessary for the article to state the obvious.

Wow, "No reason not to run"? That's a bit of an overstatement I think. I have a bone tumor in my femur, and while I would love to run it's just not a good idea for me because I HAVE A BONE TUMOR. So thanks for your dismissal of anyone's health conditions that would prevent them from running. While I would love to run, I can't because it's not a) safe or b) a good idea.

Music is a necessity when I run. Problem, the pads of the headphones get so gross after running. Earbuds do not stay in my ears despite the behind the ear hookup. What have you used that seems to be effective for long runs? I appreciate all suggestions cause I am really trying to give running a chance by doing my first half on Sunday.

I really want to run, I've even joined a running program, however I was unable to continue in the program because my knees were extremely sore. I was ok when I began the running program and was running 1 and walking 1 or running 2 and walking 1 but as the time for running increased my knees got very sore, to the point where in my cool down I would be almost unable to walk and then for the rest of the day and the entire next day. The following day it would be the day to run again and my knees would be feeling some relief but then the same cycle would happen again where I would run and as I stopped and was doing my cool down, my knees would be in excruciating pain again and would take 2 days to recover. I was fitted for proper shoes, I did stretch, and I did cross train when I could. Initially I did more cross training than I did at the end because by the end it was too painful. The pain was at the mid point between my knee cap and the inner part of my knee, it seems like where my tibia and femur joined. Any idea of what is causing this? or how to relieve it? I really want to be able to run!

I've been running for 10 years and I love it. I ran my first 1/2 marathon in 2007 and it's addictive. Looking forward to doing a marathon. My goal is to run the ING in NY. I live in Brooklyn and have cheered the runners on, (on the route) it's very exciting. I'll be 43 in a few weeks and I feel good for my age. Running does help with my physical fitness and it's very therapeutic, just me the road and nature. I did have shin splints but doing incline or hills and ice packs after workouts help a lot and my knees are good. Squats and stretching works for me as well. Happy running!!

I ran my first marathon at age 42. Each year following for the next three years I ran marathons. I final came to the conclusion that I was running about 4-500 miles for training before running the marathon and I thought that was crazy so I stopped. I am 57 and started running again. I was surprised to see that I was able to run 6 miles right from the start without stopping. I actually enjoy running. I only do it once a week and I walk the other weeks. I will probably add two days a week. I noticed that I have started to lose some weight, so that is a great motivated. I like running mainly because I love how I feel when I finish. It's a feeling of no other kind of exercise provides for me. I am grateful for my legs and feet and for the outdoors. Thank you God.

I'm 54 years old. In Jan. 2010 I weighted 197lbs. I am 5'6". My first inspiration was watching Biggest Loser for the first time. I saw that there was no excuse for the shape I found myself in. I started 30 min a day on an exercise bike. Then I got a good used treadmill and started walking/running on it. As it got nicer out side I started to hit the black top. I now weigh 172lbs. Still have some weight to go. I will be running in my first 5K on Aug. 21!

My sedentary mother died of breast cancer; which she had from age 55 to age 61. To prevent developing said disease, I've walked (treadmill) 18,132 miles, since July 7, 1996. (I am currently age 53, and on my third treadmill.)

Message for Faith Davis: I cannot stress enough that stretching is so key. Walk for at least 7 minutes and then stretch. Then get into your run. I've had knee pain, shin splints and a pulled tendon. These were befor stretching. Your running shoes do make a difference. Go get fitted for them and spend the money on the right shoe. You'll save yourself in MRI's and Dr. bills.

I'm 43 and over the winter have recently started interval training. I add spurts of jogging to my regular walking route, at least 2X a week. It makes me feel great!! I can't wait for the next time out! Who knew I would start something like this at this stage in my life?

I've been running for almost 10 yrs. now. I take Glucosamine daily for my joints. I wear custom orthotics in my running shoes. I ran my first marathon 2 yr ago and have now run 6 full marathons and numerous other distances. Since I have been using orthotics, I have had no injuries. Also, make sure you are wearing the proper kind of running shoes. I wear stability shoes as I am an overpronator. I am 46 yr. old and feel great. Keep on running!

If you want to start running but don't know how, I suggest picking a 5k that is a few months (2 or 3) out and just work up to 3.1 miles. I started running in June and did my first race in August with the goal being to just FINISH. It was so exciting to be out running witn other people and to cross the finish line. When I started, I couldn't even run half a mile without stopping but now I'm up to 6 miles.

I have been running for years! For me it is the best way to stay in shape! I always feel great after a run, the endorphin high I call it! It works, it helps me stay positive and focused much of the day. Happy and positive is the way I like to live my life! I am 52 yrs old and have been running for 20 yrs now. My knees are not a problem, but some shin splints, not to bad though. I am in excellent cardio condition, I feel as though I am much younger physically. I do feel it helps keep me young and healthy. Also including healthy diet and good food choices, it keeps the fat off, of my body. I like to stay fit and lean, and would highly suggest running to stay in good cardio health! Its so part of my life, I am so glad I started way back then, because it has motivated me to become a personal trainer, which I studied for last yr and became certified. I do believe it helps prevent disease! It definitely relieves stress! I hope to run as long as this body allows me!

@grr74- I've read that running on your toes causes shin splints- you want to try to roll your entire foot while running- it helps to even out the pressure on your joints.

Because you hate running you tense up, so when you start to run you get the shin splints. I used to get them because I also didn't like running, now it's not too bad and I don't get shin splints. So the key thing to do is to stretch and relax remember that running will help you achive your goal.

1-Easy to Start, 2-Relieves Stress, 3-Can loose weight eventually, 4-Great for your Heart, 5-Possibly live longer, 6-EXTREMELY PAINFUL IN THE KNEES.... Then you always stop because the knees hurt so much.
Even if you hop on the treadmill at lunch you are just walking really slow.
What can you do to STRENGTHEN the KNEES?? What can you take to STRENGTHEN the KNEES??
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT....

Monday I started to run. I use to run with my brother when I was in high school and loved it. Now over twenty years later I can barely jog. Monday I warmed up for 11 minutes, jogged 2 minutes and walked three minutes twice before my walking partner arrived at the park. I know the article says do it three times but my walking partner walks and not runs. Wednesday I will be back out there trying it again. Thanks for the article.

I started running again after my daughter was born four years ago...slowly. Walk/jogging...and now I jog or run almost daily...4 miles at a time. My knees hurt if I don't run. I do warn people if you over train and don't take some time off...you could get plantar facitis...my feet hurt every night. But I just can't seem to stay off my feet long enough to help. I am afraid of gaining the weight back!

I've been running for 10 years and just had my first major injury (hamstring strain). My advice: remember to cross-train, stretch, and don't try to do too much at once. Running is soooo great for staying in shape (you can eat more too), but when you're sidelined by an injury, it can take forever to get back in the game. Don't push too hard, but also, don't give up.

When you run you tend to loose all your fat plus for mothers the baby fat. You also get to look younger when skinny.

I think running with bad form is what hurt your knees. Running with good form is good for your joints. My doctor and PT said the same thing. I used to have knee problems, then they fixed my form and now I am fine. I was turning my knees in too much.

It's so true that the little increases in cardiovascular fitness do make a difference. I have been playing Division 1 hockey for the past four years now and even on our days "off" our coach recommended doing some form of activity. I never did because it was my day off, and it only came once a week! Once I finally tried what he suggested and went for a 10 minute light run on my day off and found that the following workout and practice was a lot easier. Your muscles will thank you because they will not be as tired and sore and you will be able to maintain the endurance in your legs especially. Give it a try. :)

I'm training for a triathlon and run about twice a week. I'm not a natural runner, so I try not to push myself too hard (I don't want to kill my knees). I used to not be able to talk during my runs, even at a relatively slow pace, but after a while I got a lot better. I can actually converse with my running partner now. It's amazing what a little practice will do!

started running a year ago and have never had knee issues! Always wear the right shoes for your feet/pronation style and you'll be good to go ladies! I've finished a half marathon and my self confidence is at a level I never thought it could be at! I know I can finish anything I start now. and to those saying that they hate it...try run walking! it's where you alternate running then walking( you decide whether it's 5 minutes/1 minute or one mile/1/4 mile or whatever!!) people finish whole marathon's using this technique with a smile on their face!! try it!

I just started running. I have been a walker for years. I walk outside in my neighborhood. There are lots of hills and it's a great workout. I love being outside and enjoying nature. But, I still have about 20 more pounds to lose and I can't seem to take them off with all of the other exercise and healthy eating I have been doing. I also go to the gym a couple times a week and workout on the elliptical. I do some cardio dvd's at home too. So, I decided to add running to the mix and wow what a difference it's making, but I'm not surprised that it is working. I run half of the time and walk half of the time. (right now about 45 min total time). So, I have found that with running it makes my workouts more challenging and I have found that I tend to get bored easily with exercise. Mixing it up is the secret for me.

I have found running to be the single-most fastest and effective exercise for weight control. And although I haven't run for over a year, I've been on the edge in getting back to it. I'm one of those that hates it until about minute 12, then I'm good to go. I've read that running doesn't necessarily 'cause' knee problems (overtraining is another issue), but if you have a predisposition toward knee problems (abnormal kneecap placement aggravated by the impact of running, etc.), it may manifest itself when you start running. I've also found that running is the only way to cure my insomnia. THAT DOES IT!! I'm back on the trail! Couch to 5K, here I come! (And hopefully lose a few of the pounds I packed on since I quit, too!)

I've been thinking about including running for a while now. The thing that scares me is the knee thing whether it is good for them or not. I've been doing 2 hr "power walks" for year, so I figure running is the next step. All the positives have got to out-weigh the negatives.
Wish me luck.

I am making running a part of my exercise regimen. I've learned from a personal trainer and a friend who just finished a 25K marathon that running should be a part of an exercise program. Running everday can be stressful to joints, therefore it's wise to run every other day or four days a week combined with strength training, pilates, swimming, etc.
